Hexagonal Investigations 2009

Hexagonal Investigations 2009

The artist known for his abstract painting is also known for continuous renewal of his art. Drapell challenges our notions of his work by unexpected themes and his forays into “representational art”. These works revisit the hexagonal format the artist has pursued on and off since the 1980s.

The hexagonal shape originally came from the nomadic tribal carpets the artist collected with his wife, the poet Anna Maclachlan. The current work draws on the autobiographical rendition of Georgian Bay islands. It radiates the New New esthetics and colour.

Drapell feels that the oldest art discipline, painting, is the instrument of war in the intellectual struggle that good art always wages. It is a struggle between progressive and retrogressive forces in the art scene. In our time, great painting is rare, but it unmasks the artistic fraud of “Duchamp’s Orphans”, such as Koons or Hirst.
